KEEP RUNNERS IN SCHOOL
As young Kenyan runners progress as athletes, they very often end up leaving school without graduating. The reason is very simple. Going to secondary school in Kenya requires paying for tuition, and the school fees, which by western terms are fairly small, can be a significant burden in a family's monthly budget. Our foundation will step in to help pay their school fees. With "Running for Education" we want to motivate them to stay in school while pursueing their athletic careers.
KAPCHEPKORO PRIMARY SCHOOL
Kapchepkoro Primary School is situated near Kericho in the famous Rift Valley in Kenya. It is also the home town of the number one steeplechaser in the world, Paul Koech. Some of the buildings in the school are made from mud and cow's excrements and provide only the most basic accommodations.
The "Running for Education" construction project will facilitate new permanent housing and improvement in the school infrastructure. Currently, the school has no running water or electricity, and when the sun sets, the school must close for the day. There are over 400 children between ages 1 & 8 and over 150 at pre school age .
The overall gender ratio is currently 3 boys to 2 girls. Traditionally, low priority has been given to female education due to the traditional custom of girls marrying at a young age. The students are all very keen on learning.
A number of children spend up to two hours a day each way walking to and from school - such is their desire to learn. The classroom facilities are still very basic, with up to four pupils to a desk. Golazo Sports is a major supporter of this school improvement project and will monitor the spending of funds raised.
