Chemos world leader with victory at Oslo Diamond League steeplechase
Milcah Chemos Cheywa again established the highlight among recent international Golazo athlete performances, as she posted this season's world top steeplechase time in Oslo, while also securing her first ever IAAF Diamond League victory. Several other events held this past week saw noteworthy performances by Leonard Patrick Komon, Esther Chemtai, Daniel Komen, Paul Koech, Belal Mansoor Ali, Hillary Yego, Isiah Koech, and Joseph Lagat.
The Bislett Games in Oslo held 4. June set the stage for Milcah Chemos Cheywa's continued accent among the women's steeplechase elite. In the company of then-season world leader Gladys Kipkemoi (9:16.82 from Shanghai), Chemos dominated the field with aggressive front running, winning in a season world-leading time of 9:12.66 and well clear of Kipkemoi (9:16.21). Also in Oslo, Leonard Patrick Komon ran the second sub-13:00 performance of his career, finishing 10th in 12:59.15, making him the season's world no. 11 performer. The Bislett Games was the season's 3rd stop on the 14-meeting 2010 IAAF Diamond League, which continues 10. June in Rome (Golden Gala) and 12. June in New York (adidas Grand Prix).
Several Golazo distance runners posted strong performances at the Meeting International Mohammed VI d'Athlétisme de Rabat held 6. June. Benefitting from the pace making of Golazo teammate Vincent Rono (who reached the 3000m mark in 7:48.19), the 5000m provided personal bests for Daniel Kipchirchir Komen (4th in 13:04.02), Paul Kipsiele Koech (5th in 13:05.18), and Isiah Kiplangat Koech (6th in 13:07.70). Isiah K. Koech's mark also put him at the top of this season's world junior 5000m listing. In the 1500, Belal Mansoor Ali finished 4th in a season best 3:34.98, the '10 world no. 12 mark for the event.
Other highlights were provided by Esther Chemtai in Hengelo on 31. May (3rd in 5000m with 14:57.16 personal best and '10 world no. 11 mark) and Hillary Yego in Brazzaville on 30. May (5th in 3000m steeplechase in 8:35.08 personal best, also the season's top world junior mark in the SC).
Finally, in road action, Joseph Kimeli Lagat on 5. June won the Stockholm Marathon in 2:12:48, which follows his 2nd place at the Valencia Marathon earlier this season, where he established his 2:10:24 personal best.
